Scope:
As catalysts or reaction initiators, dilute peroxide solutions in various organic solvents are often utilized in tests. Autoxidation can also produce peroxides in certain types of plants. Ethers, acetals, dienes, and alkyl aromatic compounds are among them.
Procedure:
In the procedures of ASTM E299, samples are dissolved in a mixture of acetic acid and chloroform. The solution is deaerated before adding potassium iodide reagent solution. The mixture is allowed to react in the reaction chamber. For 1 hour in the dark, a comparable amount of iodine is released. The solution’s absorbance is measured, and the amount of active oxygen in the sample is calculated. A de-aerated reaction-absorption cell is throughout this experiment. To increase the precision, absorbance measurements are taken at 410 nm.
