Scope:
The ASTM E1232 test method covers the characteristics of chemicals. It determines their applications and specifications. The vapor concentration of the chemicals is determined and the reliability is checked. The method proceeds with the quality check, heat treatment, and the testing of the chemical composition of materials. The results obtained from this method help in quality control, research, and performance evaluation of chemicals.
Procedure:
For the ASTM E1232 test, in an air atmosphere, a pool of liquid is churned in a closed vessel. Visual observation of the upward and outward spread of flame away from the ignition source is noted when the vapour-air mixture above this liquid is exposed to an ignition source. Between trials, the temperature in the test vessel is changed until the minimal temperature at which flame propagates away from the ignition source is determined.

Specimen detail:
Specimen size should be as per the requirements. In this ASTM E1232 test, 50 cm³ of the sample is taken.
Result:
Calculate ltl, that is the uncorrected temperature limit of flammability, using the equation. Correct this limit to LTL at standard atmospheric pressure, 101.3 kPa (760 mm Hg), using equations where:
p = absolute initial pressure in the vessel in kPa. LTL 5 ltl10.03 ~760 2 P! (3)
P = absolute initial pressure in the vessel in mm Hg
All temperatures are in degrees Celsius.
Conclusion:
The ASTM E1232 test method is specifically important for the quality assurance and durability check of chemicals. Their reliability is checked and their flammability properties are determined.
