Scope:
The water resistance characteristics of coatings are determined by the ASTM D870 test method. This helps prevent material failure and leads to better quality production. The condensation tests of coatings help with specification acceptance, quality control, research, and development of coatings and materials. The technique is applicable for metals, plastics, or wood specimens with the coating facing the inside of the chamber. The blister resistance can also be determined through this procedure.
Procedure:
ASTM D870 test method proceeds with the immersion of coated specimens in water in a corrosion resistant container. Exposure conditions are varied and testing is conducted at various temperature ranges and the changes in color, blistering, loss of adhesion, softening, or embrittlement is observed and reported. Water permeates the coating at rates that are dependent upon the characteristics of the coating and the temperature of the water.

Specimen Size:
Specimen size should be as per the requirements. In this ASTM D870 test, the specimen is of adequate size to fit in the chamber.
Data:
Specimens are evaluated at no less than 5 min and no more than 10 min after removal from the test, as the effects from water exposure can change within a short time.
Conclusion:
The ASTM D87 test method is specifically important for the quality assurance and durability check of coatings. A detailed analysis is performed and water resistance characteristics are determined.
