Scope:
ASTM D7349 covers the determination of roofing and waterproofing materials capability to seal around fasteners. Also, this method is provided for adoption by ASTM or other consensus based roofing and waterproofing product specifications as a standardized means to evaluate the capability to seal around a fastener.
Procedure:
ASTM D7349 test procedure was conducted under the water depth of 125 ± 6 mm (5 ± 0.25 in), test temperature of 4 ± 2 °C (39.2 ± 3.6 °F) and a test period of 72 ± 0.25 h. The test assembly was placed on the top of a 4 L (1 gal) can from which the lid has been removed. The water column container was filled to the depth specified above with deionized or distilled water. The test assembly was placed on the top of a 4 L (1 gal) bottom can in a temperature specified above. At the end of the test period, the test assembly was removed from the 4 L (1 gal) bottom can and the water was poured from the water column container without splashing onto the substrate, blotting the inside of the water column container dry. Any water in the 4 L (1 gal) bottom can, on the shank of the fastener, or on the underside of the substrate should be noted. The water column container should be removed carefully from the roofing or waterproofing material. The roofing or waterproofing material should be peeled back to the fastener and inspected. A specimen was considered to pass the test if no water was present in the 4 L (1 gal) bottom can, the shank of the fastener, underside of the substrate, or between the material and the substrate.
Sample size:
Specimen roller with mass of 11.8 kg (26 lb) ± 0.5%
Diameter of 125 mm (5 in) ± 5%
Width of 125 mm (5 in) ± 5%
Substrate one piece of 255 x 255 mm (10 x 10 in) ± 5%.
Data: The Data stated in SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard.
Conclusion: ASTM D7349 covers the determination of roofing and waterproofing materials capability to seal around fasteners.
