Scope
The ASTM D6116 test method is quite beneficial in understanding the resistance offered by leather in response to blockage. This test method also helps in identifying ease of separation and finish peeling.
Procedure
In ASTM D6116, the specimen is perforated 2 mm from one end and suspended on a normal size paper clip that has been fully extended. At 23 ± 2°C, the jar is filled with tap water to a height of no more than 1.25 cm over the bottom of the hanging specimen. The specimen is placed in an inverted petri dish. A 2000g weight is placed on the top of the specimen. The specimen is cooled for 30 mins. The cooled and folded specimen is viewed by carefully drawing the fold apart by hand.
Specimen size
For specimens per sample, test one rectangle 2.5 by 10 cm.
Results:
The following scale is used in ASTM D6116 to calculate the resistance of the specimen:
Passed = No blocking
Not passed = Finished peeling
Conclusion:
ASTM D6116 test technique determines how resistant leather is to blockage under certain temperature, humidity, and pressure conditions.
