Altitude Testing

High altitude or low pressure testing is an important step in ensuring that any equipment shipped by air or that is built for installation at high ground elevations is able to function properly in those conditions. MIL-STD 810 Method 500 is the standard used to perform this testing. It is designed to simulate the effects of high altitudes, such as escaping gases or fluids from gasket-sealed enclosures, rupturing of hermetically sealed containers, changes in physicochemical qualities, arcing or corona discharge, decreased heat transfer, evaporation of lubricants, and engine irregularities.

In addition, hermetic seals must be checked to ensure they are able to hold up in high altitude conditions. Testing at high altitudes or under low pressure is an important step in guaranteeing the quality of any product that is shipped by air or built for high ground installations.
