    ASTM E8 / ASTM E8M  is a standardized test method for the determination of the tensile properties of metals under uniaxial tension. This test method is applicable to metallic products in the form of plates, bars, rods, wires, and structural shapes.

    ASTM E8 and E8M employ the same procedure for tensile testing. The only difference is that E8 uses US customary units, whereas E8M provides results in SI metric units without affecting the execution of the test.

    ASTM E8 tests the mechanical strength of metals. It ensures that metals possess the required strength when subjected to a tensile load. This, in turn, prevents metals from becoming brittle.

    Yield strength is the measure of the stress at which the permanent deformation of the material starts. Tensile strength is the maximum stress that a metal can withstand before necking and breaking.

    ASTM E8 specifies that tests can be conducted on flat dog bone specimens, round bars, and tubing. Specimens can be extracted from either material or finished products, as long as they satisfy the specified dimensions and surface finish requirements.

    ASTM E8/E8M ensures that the metals used are of specified mechanical strength. It prevents the use of materials that are brittle or underperforming, which may lead to a failure in the structure or the rejection of the product.
