UV Weathering Testing Method

UV weathering tests are done when there is a need to evaluate the photostability of a particular material or the performance of UV stabilizers. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the photodegradation of various materials. Invisible ultraviolet radiation, characterized by short wavelengths, is responsible for much of the degradation, a process that initially leads to the degradation of the molecular structure of surfaces. This often causes changes in the physical and mechanical properties of the material like discoloration, chalking, flaking, etc.

Artificial weathering tests have been developed that expose the specimen to shorter UV wavelengths of light by using fluorescent lamps under controlled conditions. Accelerated weathering testing is a type of weathering test used to measure the future potential for material durability under specific environmental conditions. This is a simulation of natural conditions to accelerate the weathering process instead of waiting years for results in real-world weather conditions.

The various test standards include ASTM G154, ASTM D4329, ASTM D4587, ISO 4892, SAE J2020.
