TYPES OF DIELECTRIC STRENGTH MEASUREMENTS

The standard tests that are most frequently used to determine dielectric strength are as mentioned below:

  • Short-time method: In this procedure, a constant increase in voltage is supplied across the two electrodes over time at a constant pace (500 V/sec) until a breakdown takes place. The breakdown is described as when the sample undergoes decomposition or an electrical burn-through.
  • Slow rate-of-rise method: In this test procedure, the test electrodes are exposed to a voltage starting at 50% of the breakdown voltage and continuing until breakdown occurs. 
  • Step-by-Step method: The preferred starting voltage is delivered to the test electrodes in stages and for the desired duration until breakdown occurs.
  • Partial Discharge Test: Partial discharges are small electrical discharges that occur within the material due to the presence of defects or impurities. By monitoring the partial discharges, the dielectric strength of the material can be determined.
  • AC Dielectric Strength Test: The test involves applying a high-voltage AC signal to the material until it breaks down and conducts electricity. The voltage at which breakdown occurs is the dielectric strength of the material.
  • DC Dielectric Strength Test: The test involves applying a high-voltage DC signal to the material until it breaks down and conducts electricity. The voltage at which breakdown occurs is the dielectric strength of the material.
