Overview
ASTM D3363 specifies a standard method for pencil scratch testing to determine the surface hardness of organic coating films. The test assesses a coating’s resistance to surface deformation, scratching, and gouging using calibrated graphite pencils of known hardness.
This test provides a rapid, realistic determination of the surface abrasion resistance and mechanical hardness of paints, varnishes, lacquers, and protective films on metal, wood, and plastic substrates. Results are reported as a pencil hardness rating, indicating the hardest pencil grade that will not mar the coating surface. ASTM D3363 has applications in quality control, product development, and performance rating of coating systems.

Scope, Applications, and Benefits
Scope
ASTM D3363 determines the relative hardness of coating films by measuring scratch resistance using Gardner-type pencils.
It evaluates:
- Scratch resistance of coating films
- Surface durability
- Effect of curing conditions on hardness
- Comparative performance of coating systems
- Resistance to mechanical surface damage
The method applies to flat, smooth, and uniform coated surfaces.
Applications
- Automotive paint systems
- Architectural coatings
- Industrial protective coatings
- Consumer electronics coatings
- Wood finishes and varnishes
- Quality control laboratories
- Research and development of coating formulations
Benefits
- Provides a quick and simple hardness assessment
- Enables ranking of coatings by scratch resistance
- Supports quality control and batch consistency
- Assists in coating formulation development
- Evaluates curing efficiency
- Improves coating performance validation
Test Process
Surface Conditioning & Pencil Selection
Coated panels are cleaned and conditioned; calibrated pencils from 6B to 9H are selected.
1Tip Preparation
Pencil tips are sharpened and flattened using fine sandpaper.
2Scratch Testing
The pencil is held at a 45° angle and pushed 6 mm across the surface under uniform force.
3Inspection & Hardness Rating
The surface is examined, and the hardest pencil that causes no damage is recorded.

Frequently Asked Questions
ASTM D3363 is used to determine the surface hardness of organic coatings by assessing their resistance to scratching with pencils of known hardness. It helps evaluate the coating’s durability and resistance to mechanical damage.
This test can be applied to a wide range of coatings, including paints, lacquers, varnishes, powder coatings, and other organic films applied on metal, wood, or plastic substrates.
Film hardness is determined by using a set of pencils ranging from soft (6B) to hard (9H). The hardest pencil that does not scratch the film defines the coating’s hardness.
