Scope:
The composition of feed stocks and products connected to the petroleum refining process is revealed by the boiling range distribution of light and medium petroleum distillate fractions. ASTM D7213 test method extends the scope of determination of boiling range by gas chromatography beyond the scope of test method D2887, and below the test method D6352. This helps evaluate the quality and durability of petroleum products.
Procedure:
ASTM D7213 test method proceeds with the elution of hydrocarbon components of the sample by a non-polar open tubular gas chromatographic column. A sample aliquot is diluted with a viscosity-reducing solvent before being added to the chromatographic apparatus. The site of injection can be heated separately or in conjunction with the column oven to vaporize the sample. The boiling point temperatures of known normal paraffin hydrocarbons spanning the spectrum of this test technique (C5-C60) are determined and connected. The retention time is used to calculate the boiling point temperature for each reported percent of increment.

Specimen Size:
Specimen size should be as per the requirements. The ASTM D7213 test method proceeds with the injection of an appropriate aliquot (0.2 µL to 2.0 µL) of the calibration mixture into the chromatograph.
Data:
The boiling point is determined by applying the formula where BPx = boiling point extrapolated, RTx = retention time to be extrapolated, RT1 = retention time of the first component in the calibration table, and so on.
Conclusion:
ASTM D7213 test method is specifically important for the determination of the boiling point of petroleum distillates. This helps determine their properties and specify standards for quality control.
