    Scope:

    ASTM D129 is a highly significant and preferable method in terms of measuring sulfur in petroleum products such as additive concentrates, lubricating oil and lubricating greases that cannot be burned in a wick lamp.

    Procedure:

    In ASTM D129 the sample is firstly oxidized by combustion at very high pressure in a decomposition device. The amount of sulfur present in the sample will be determined gravimetrically as barium sulfate. The high-pressure decomposition device should be enclosed in a shield of steel plate to avoid any sort of explosion.

    Specimen size should be as per the requirements. In this ASTM A709/A709M test, the specimen having tensile strength such as (Grades 50 {345}, 50S {345S}, 50W {345W}, and HPS 50W {HPS 345W}) is used.
