What is Ocean Bound Plastic ? Is it Helpful?
OBP- Ocean Bound Plastic
Ocean Bound Waste (OBW) is a crucial component in reducing plastic waste in the ocean, as 80% of it originates from land. Collecting OBP before it becomes ocean plastic is an effective strategy to reduce harm to the seas. Ocean Bound Waste (OBW) refers to plastic trash that has been left and is on its way to the ocean. The use of OBP is essential in the struggle to reduce plastic waste in the sea.
About 80% of the plastic waste that has made its way into the oceans is believed to have come from land. Therefore, concentrating on collecting OBP before it turns into ocean plastic is a direct and very effective strategy to lessen the harm done to our seas. By elevating OBP’s market standing and credibility, this certification hopes to incentivize its collection.
Specifically, the following types of OBP collections fall under the remit:
- Resources for Fishing in Coastal Waters
- Organizations in the plastic recycling value chain, from the collection of recyclable OBP in the environment to the production of plastic packaging and consumer products, can all receive certification from Control Union.
- Services for neutralizing plastic waste in the environment are provided by groups that collect OBP that cannot be recycled commercially.
- Manufacturers and Consumers of Plastic (companies looking to reduce their plastic usage)
- It is incumbent upon your company, as an OBP partner, to verify that the goods you sell are, in fact, OBP-made. You must also show proof of origin in order to convey this assurance to the customer. The Ocean Bound Plastic Certification Program accomplishes all of this.

By passing the OBP Certification exam, you’ll gain the ability to:
- Gain access to environmentally conscientious, higher-value consumers
- Take an active role in protecting the oceans and their biodiversity.
- Create sustainable employment opportunities for marginalized populations and have a beneficial social impact.
- Peterson and Zero Plastic Oceans, a non-profit organization, created the certification together.
