Discover the Eco-Friendly Solution through PET Plastics
PET Plastics, or polyethylene terephthalate, is a type of polyester similar to the material used to make clothes. While synthetic fibers take up the lion’s share of PET production, roughly a third of global demand comes from the production of bottles. The addition of the gaseous chemical terephthalate transforms the otherwise opaque polyethylene into the transparent, high-gloss plastic known as PET.
What is the primary function of PET plastics?
In particular, carbonated soft drinks, juices, and water bottles are frequently packaged in this plastic. Terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol are its starting components. In the process of making them, a polymer chain is formed, and the resulting PET resin pellets are melted down to a fluid state. This makes it possible to mold or extrude the plastic into almost any form.
Because of its durability and wide color palette, it is frequently used to package toiletries, cosmetics, and household goods. PET’s safety for use in the food, beverage, personal care, pharmaceutical, and medical industries has also been acknowledged by international health authorities.
Sustainability
Despite the fact that PET’s raw components come from oil and natural gas, it is a much more efficient packaging material than glass or aluminum. Because of its high strength-to-weight ratio, less packing is required to ship the same amount of product, saving money on gas.
Although PET was first synthesized in the 1940s, the year it became widely used for plastic bottles was 1977, before it was made recyclable. PET is no longer only a disposable packaging material; with recycling rates at 60%, it has become an integral part of the growing circular economy.
- The production of PET plastics bottles only consumes a negligible amount of the world’s oil supply.
- Plastic production only accounts for 4% of global oil consumption.
- The packaging industry accounts for 37% of all plastic used in the UK.
- PET plastics drinking bottles account for only 1.2% of all plastic packaging.
Recycling
PET packaging can be manufactured entirely from recycled plastic and can be recycled multiple times. To create new PET resin pellets that can be remolded, they are professionally recycled through either thorough washing and remelting or chemical breakdown of their component ingredients.
New PET bottles and jars, carpets, clothing, vehicle parts, and building materials are just some of the many things that may be made from recycled PET.
The number “1” inside the universal recycling symbol is the resin identification code for PET plastics in various countries; this symbol can be seen on the bottom of the container.

The Plastic Bottles Company carries a large selection of PET bottles and jars for use in numerous industries, including the food & beverage, cosmetics, and personal care markets. Our bottles and jars can be paired with a wide variety of closures and add-ons. To name a few, we provide induction heat seal caps, EPE lined caps, child resistant closures, tamper evident caps, tiny sprays, atomizers, twist tops, sponge applicators, flip tops, disc tops, and pumps. For the whole selection of PET goods, please visit our store.
Bottles and jars made from recycled PET are available in our store and will not be subject to the plastic tax (from April 2022).
The Plastic Tax: What Is It?
A white paper outlining the government’s initiatives to reduce the use of virgin plastic has been published. Because of this, a charge on disposable plastic items will be implemented in April 2022. If a product has 30% or more recycled content, the seller and buyer are exempt from the tax.
