What Are Specific Gravity and Density?

Density is a fundamental physical property defined as mass per unit volume (kg/m³ or g/cm³). Specific gravity — also called relative density — is the dimensionless ratio of a material’s density to the density of a reference substance, typically water at 4°C (density = 1.000 g/cm³). Because the reference density is 1.000, specific gravity numerically equals density in g/cm³ for most practical purposes.

Methods for Measuring Density and Specific Gravity

Pycnometer Method

A pycnometer is a precision-volume glass flask used to measure the specific gravity of liquids and fine powders. The sample fills a precisely known volume, and its mass is compared to the same volume of water. Pycnometer methods are governed by ASTM D792 (plastics), ASTM D854 (soils), and ASTM D891 (liquids).

Archimedes (Hydrostatic) Method

The hydrostatic or displacement method determines the density of solid specimens by measuring their apparent weight loss when submerged in a liquid of known density. This method is widely used for plastics, ceramics, rubber, and dense metals per ASTM D792 and ISO 1183.

Gas Pycnometry

Gas pycnometry uses an inert gas (helium) to measure the true skeletal volume of porous solids and powders, from which true density is calculated. Helium accesses all open pores, making it superior to liquid pycnometry for porous ceramics, carbon materials, and powder metallurgy precursors.

Digital Density Meters (Oscillating U-tube)

Automated digital density meters measure liquid density with high precision (±0.0001 g/cm³) using the oscillating U-tube principle, where the resonant frequency of a vibrating tube shifts with the mass of liquid filling it. Used for quality control of lubricants, solvents, coatings, and liquid chemicals per ASTM D4052.

Bulk Density and Tap Density

For granular solids and powders, bulk density (loosely poured) and tap density (after mechanical vibration) are important for packaging, handling, and dosing systems.

In plastics manufacturing, density indicates the degree of crystallinity, presence of fillers, and batch-to-batch consistency. In coatings and adhesives, density measurements verify formulation consistency and detect dilution or contamination. In geotechnical engineering, soil particle specific gravity is a fundamental parameter for void ratio and saturation calculations. In materials research, density data is combined with other properties to calculate specific strength, specific stiffness, and other performance indices.
