Scope:
The standard method ASTM E238 describes the bearing yield strength and bearing strength of metallic materials. The data provided is significant for the comparison of materials and the design of structures. The test involves subjecting a load or strain to a metallic flat sheet material under a certain rate, and simultaneous measurement of the bearing deformation. The bearing deformation measurement is the axial bearing deformation of the specimen.
Test Procedure:
In ASTM E328, the specimens’ dimension is measured, and a specified cleaning process of the specimen is conducted before loading it into the apparatus. The test is conducted with simultaneous measurement of a controlled rate of staining or loading and bearing deformation. The recommended rate for metallic materials is 0.05 bearing strain per minute.

Test Specimen:
The required dimensions of the flat sheet specimen are provided in Figure 1 of ASTM E238. The ratio of pin diameter and specimen thickness should be around 2-4.
Result:
The ASTM E238 bearing yield strength is reported in inch-pound-unit.
Conclusion:
The standard method ASTM E238 describes the bearing yield strength of metallic materials tested under a certain rate of straining or loading.
