ASTM E1178 Analysis of Acrylonitrile

Scope:

ASTM E1178 test method covers the characteristics of acrylonitrile. It determines their applications and specifications. It helps detect the impurities and color of acrylonitrile. The method proceeds with the quality check and the testing of the chemical composition of materials.  The results obtained from this method help in quality control, research, and performance evaluation of acrylonitrile.  

Procedure:

In ASTM E1178, the specimen is prepared by adding 100mL of caustic iodine to a 125mL Erlenmeyer flask. The solution is then titrated and retained in separate flasks. The end point is indicated and the readings are taken. The lower aqueous layers are then drained and the volume of the solution is determined. 

Specimen detail:

Specimen size should be as per the requirements. This test method covers the determination of HCN over the concentration of 0.5 to 10 μg/g in acrylonitrile.

Result:

The method covers the analysis of hydrogen cyanide, p-Methoxyphenol, and water by preparing specific solutions and performing titration.
