Scope:
ASTM D6905-03 describes the procedure to measure the ability of a coating film and its substrate to withstand defects caused by physical impact. This method determines the resistance of the coating to cracking, shattering, etc. This practice is useful in predicting the performance of the organic coating.
Test Procedure:
The organic coating to be tested is applied on suitable metal panels. Once the coating is cured, standard weight is dropped over the panel. The weight is dropped from a measured distance. Upon impact, the coating and substrate undergo deformation. The surface is then visually inspected for cracks on the coating surface.
Specimen size:
The material to be tested is to be applied uniformly over the metal panels tested by the impact flexibility tester. The thickness of the coating is measured.
Data:
The maximum percent elongation or flexibility of the organic coating under test is reported.
