Scope:
ASTM D6108 test method determines compressive properties of plastic lumber and shapes and specifies their behavior. The help of a load-deformation curve determines stress and modulus of elasticity. Yield point, strain, secant modulus, deformation, displacement, and gauge length are also measured. It provides data for research and aids in the development and quality control, along with specifying the applications of these materials. In this way, this test method defines the standard for preparing and testing plastic lumber.
Procedure:
The ASTM D6108 testing apparatus consists of a testing machine, load measurement system, compression platens, displacement measurement system, and micrometers. A micrometer dial gauge is used to measure the specimen size. Then the sample is carefully aligned between the compression platens. The displacement, thickness, yield point, and deformation are detected by compressing the specimen. All these properties help define the applications of materials, especially plastics.
Specimen Size:
The specimen size is taken as per the ASTM D6108 testing requirements. Five specimens are taken with lengths equal to twice their minimum cross-sectional dimensions.
Data:
Calculate the standard deviation (estimated) using the equation, where:
s = estimated standard deviation,
X = value of single observation,
n = number of observations, and
X ̄ = arithmetic mean of the set of observations.
Conclusion:
ASTM D6108 test method determines compressive properties of plastic lumber and shapes and specifies their behavior
