Scope

Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (GFAAS)  is a method for determining low sodium concentrations. Small amounts of sodium of 1–10 g/L can greatly impact high-pressure boilers and nuclear power plants. The effluents from condensate polishing systems should contain fewer than 1 mg/L.

Procedure

In the test method of ASTM D6071, the system is heated in an inert gas atmosphere and a sample volume of several microliters is deposited on a graphite tube within an electrical furnace. The sample is evaporated until it is completely dry, then ashes and atomized. The quantity of energy absorbed by grounded atoms in a sample is proportional to the analyte concentration. The absorption signal produced during atomization is saved in microprocessor memory, and an analytical curve is compared to standards.

Specimen size

2.542 g of sodium chloride is dissolved in water and must be diluted to 1 L.

Data

Precision presented in the following way:

St = 0.22(X)+ 0.88

So = 0(X) + 0.91

Where:

St = overall precision,

So = single operator precision,

X =determined concentration of sodium, μg/L.

Conclusion

ASTM D6071 covered the measurement of trace sodium in high purity water.
