Scope:
This procedure helps determine the compatibility of a resin in a high boiling ink solvent at low concentrations. It is used with ink resins intended mainly for oil-based inks.
Test Procedure:
In the standard test of ASTM D6038 2 grams of crushed resin is weighed along with 18 grams of solvent and placed inside the test tube. The heat gun is pointed from below the test tube. Resin is mixed with the solvent gradually and when the temperature is reached to 200 °C the heat source is removed. The temperature at dissolution is recorded, and then the cooling is started. The precipitation point is recorded.
Test Specimen:
The solid resin is crushed to particles of a size 2 mm3.
Data
Resins and solvent mixes with precipitation temperatures below 25 °C are considered highly compatible or soluble at ambient temperatures.
Conclusion:
ASTM D6038 provides both the manual and automated procedures for finding the compatibility of lithographic ink resins in high boiling ink solvents
