Scope:

ASTM D5672 test method determines the thickness of flexible cellular materials that indicates the production rates and quality of the cushions. This test method is important to get accurate readings at different sample concentrations. It defines a standard to control the quality of cushions. It characterizes the thickness of flexible cellular materials as per industrial standards. It is applicable for research purposes. The readings are taken as per the 25% IFD on a 100mm thick piece of foam. This helps specify their reliability and adjust the thickness level of various materials.

Procedure:

The apparatus applicable for IFD in test methods are set up. The dimensions of the specimen are determined. An indenter foot is used to measure the original thickness of the foam, and the circumference of the indenter foot is drawn on the foam with the help of a felt tip marker. The indentation speed is determined. After the waiting period, the thickness of the specimen is considered again, and the force gauge noted the 25mm deflection IFD. The direction and placement are to be carefully considered during the whole process.

Specimen Size:

In this case, the specimen size is either 75-100mm or 100-165mm in thickness. The length and width of the specimen are 380mm by 380mm.

Data:

The amount of deflection for a specimen sized between 75 and 100 mm would be 25 mm, whereas it would be 75 mm for a specimen of thickness ranging from 100-165 mm.
