Scope:
ASTM D2582 is highly significant in terms of measuring the resistance ability of a material to dynamic punctures. Although it is clear that material punctures don’t contribute in determining force value, by comparing the punctured specimen with the non-punctured specimen, the extent of any puncture resistance can be estimated.
Procedure:
The given specimen in ASTM D2582 is to be placed under the clamps. The specimen is adjusted to a down position so that the specimen drapes against the holder contour. It is adjusted in a way that the specimen must not be slipped. The selected carriage is lowered until the probe point touches but does not indent the specimen. After the carriage has stopped its upward movement, relocate it in the release mechanism by pushing the carriage up in the guide channel by hand.
Specimen detail:
Specimens are typically cut in any rectangular shape so long as they are approximately 200 mm (8.0 in.) long in the direction of tear and can be held by all five clamps.
Result:
In this way, by performing ASTM D2582, puncture-propagation tear resistance of plastic film and thin sheeting is measured.
Conclusion:
ASTM D2582 test method is specifically important for measuring the puncture-propagation tear resistance of plastic film and thin sheeting.
