Scope:
When the coarse-grained particles of a sample are soft and easily ground up, as in Practise D 421, or when the fine particles are extremely cohesive and tend to resist separation from the coarse particles, Procedure A is employed to prepare soil samples for plasticity tests and particle-size analyses.
Description Of The Test:
Wet preparation of field-collected soil samples for particle-size analysis and calculation of soil constants is the subject of this procedure. When the coarse-grained particles of a sample are soft and pulverize quickly, or when the fine particles of a sample are very cohesive and likely to resist separation from the coarse particles, Method A is employed to prepare the soil sample for plasticity tests and particle-size analyses. In nature, certain soils never dry completely to the point where they significantly alter their features when dried. Soils should be brought to the laboratory in sealed containers and processed according to Procedure B of this practice if their actual natural gradation and plasticity characteristics are sought.
Preferred Test Sample Size:
Number of test Specimen: 1
Test Specimen Size: Material passing #10 sieve of 115 grams for sandy soil and 65 grams for silt and clay soil
Keywords: Dry preparation, Particle size analysis

Conclusion:
ASTM D2217 is an essential standard for determining the moisture content of the soil, crucial for construction, agriculture, and environmental analysis. Its accurate methodology and consistent results make it a foundational tool, aiding in informed decision-making and ensuring optimal soil management practices.
