Icing and Freezing Rain Testing
Testing for icing and freezing rain is done in any of our environmental chambers. We have a drive-in chamber that is 12′ wide by 10′ deep and 9′ tall, allowing us to test large test items for ice and freezing rain. Ice is quickly formed up to the required thickness using specially created atomizing nozzles and pre-chilled water. Infinita Lab personnel have years of icing and freezing rain test experience, which has given them the skills to swiftly obtain the appropriate ice thickness and cut down on test time and expense.
Infinita Lab’s Test Lab Equipment for Icing and Freezing Rain
Any of our environmental chambers can be used for ice and freezing rain tests by Infinita Lab. Ice is formed rapidly and consistently using atomizing nozzles and water pre-chillers specially built for the purpose.
Outline of Testing for Icing and Freezing Rain
According to MIL-STD 810 Method 521, ice and freezing rain testing are carried out to assess the impact of icing caused by freezing rain, mist, or sea spray on the equipment’s operating capabilities. This approach offers tests for assessing the efficiency of de-icing tools and methods, including expedients.
Ice can accumulate in one of three ways:
- From raindrops landing on something that’s below freezing
- On a surface that is at or near freezing from freezing rain
- From sea spray that coats equipment in below-freezing conditions
Two typical circumstances are listed in MIL-STD 810:
- Clear glazing ice forms when drizzle or rain condenses on things.
- When fog or mist falls on surfaces that are below freezing, rime ice forms.
Ice formation can lead to issues like:
- Connects moving parts.
- Footing hazard increases as equipment’s weight is increased.
- Obstructs the space between moving parts
- Failures in structures
- Lowers the effectiveness of the airflow
- Visibility through windows and optical instruments is obstructed.
- Influences electromagnetic radiation transmission
- Increases the risk of equipment damage from the use of mechanical, manual, or chemical ice removal measures
