Thermal effusivity (also known as thermal inertia) measures the one-dimensional heat transmission between two closely associated and touching objects. It combines thermal conductivity (k), density, and heat capacity (Cp) into one value. Thermal effusivity is used to quantify perceived feel and comfort, allowing for product design improvement in a highly competitive market.

The Modified Transient Plane Source (MTPS) method is ideal for thermal effusivity testing due to its direct measurement capabilities and ability to accommodate samples of various sizes. This method is suitable for characterizing various materials’ warm feel/cool touch and is the only method that conforms to ASTM D7984.
