Introduction

ASTM D1623 is a guideline for determining cellular plastic’s tensile and tensile adhesion properties. It also detects the effect of specific conditions like temperature, humidity, and machine speed on rigid cellular plastics. Different methods are used depending on the test sample’s quantity. The units of final results are in the SI system.

Scope

The ASTM D1623 is essential in determining a rigid cellular material’s tensile and tensile adhesion properties under specific conditions and at different specimen quantities. It provides data for research, aids in development and quality control, and specifies the applications of these materials. In this way, this test method defines the standard for preparing and testing rigid cellular materials, especially plastics. Moreover, the durability of the materials under specific temperature, humidity, and speed conditions is also observed.

ASTM D1623 Test Procedure

For ASTM D1623 testing, the apparatus consists of a testing machine, grips, load indicator, extension indicator, and specimen cutter. Initially, measure the specimen area, set the load indicator to zero, and insert the specimen into the grips. Then, align the grip assembly with the specimen. Later, tighten the screw such that it firmly presses the the surfaces of the specimen. Finally, note the measurements with the help of a stress-strain curve formed by an extensometer. Calculate the extension of the specimen at the point of rupture.

Specimen Size

The specimen size should be the same as the requirements. In this case, the dimensions of the specimen should be 1.129 inches or 28.7 mm in diameter and an area of 645 mm².

Generally, this method uses three types of samples depending on the quantity of the sample.

Sample TypeDescription
Type AIt is used when there is enough quantity of the test sample to make the necessary specimen.
Type BIt is used in specimens like sandwich panels when the sample quantity is small.
Type CIt is used to determine the tensile adhesive property or bond strength of cellular plastics.

Data:

Elongation and tensile strength are determined. Calculate the standard deviation (estimated) for ASTM D1623 as follows and report it to two significant figures:

Where:

s = estimated standard deviation,

x = value of a single observation,

n = number of observations, and

x̄ = arithmetic mean of the set of observations.

Result

The test result for ASTM D1623 is reported to be two significant figures.

Conclusion

The ASTM D1623 test method is utilized to determine the tensile and tensile adhesive properties of rigid cellular material; this indicates a much better indication of how it would act in various conditions, including temperature, humidity, and machine speed. This method facilitates material research, development, and control for further assurance that the materials live up to the standards they are meant to be used. Flexibility and adaptability to various specimen sizes and types allow the test to be used with a large number of materials and also accommodate different sample quantities. Standard deviation is an essential component of the reporting and an interpretation of the results for proper judgment of material reliability and durability.

FAQs

What is ASTM D1623?

ASTM D1623 is a guideline for determining cellular plastic's tensile and tensile adhesion properties. It also detects the effect of specific conditions of temperature and humidity and tests machine speed on rigid cellular plastics.

Why is tensile testing necessary for rigid cellular plastics?

Tensile testing is valuable for mechanical strength and elasticity. It helps to understand how the material performs under stress, and thus, it plays a vital role in attaining durability and reliability in applications.

What conditions should be controlled during testing?

The temperature and humidity environment are controlled during the test to provide consistent, repeatable results. The standard may specify these or require that they be controlled over a specific range.
