Determining Flexural Properties of Ceramic Whiteware
ASTM C674 determines the modulus of rupture and the modulus of elasticity. Materials engineers describe how a material deforms using these two parameters.
The main distinction between the modulus of elasticity and the modulus of rigidity is that the former describes how the material is deformed when a force is applied at an angle to an object’s surface, causing the material to lengthen or shorten. In contrast, the latter describes how a material is deformed when a force is applied parallel to an object’s surface, causing one surface to move in relation to another surface of the same object.
In ASTM C674, the ceramic sample is set up on two ridges and subjected to a direct load until it breaks. The modulus of elasticity may be calculated by stopping the applied force at regular intervals and measuring the specimen’s deflection at the midpoint to the nearest 0.001 inches.
