Non-Metals : Features

Introduction:

The non-metals can be found on the right side of the periodic table, where they make up a small minority. The element hydrogen stands out from the rest; it is located on the top left of the periodic table and, at ambient temperature and pressure, it does not behave like a metal. The predicted behaviour of hydrogen under high pressure is that of an alkali metal.

Most Important Points

  • In the periodic table, there is a tiny subset of elements that are not metals.
  • Except for hydrogen, these elements can be found on the right side of the table.
  • The halogens, and noble gases all fall under the category of non-metals.
  • Most nonmetals do not have a metallic appearance. They tend to be vibrant in colour.
  • The majority of nonmetals exist in a wide variety of allotropes. Graphite and diamond, for instance, are both composed entirely of carbon.
  • Because of their low melting and boiling temperatures, nonmetals are often not good heat and electricity conductors. They create solids that are easily broken because they are not pliable or ductile.
  • At ambient temperature and pressure, nonmetals can exist in three states: solid, liquid, and gas.

Periodic Table of Non-metals

On the right-hand side of the periodic table, you can see the elements that are not metals. In the segment of the periodic table where the p orbitals of the elements with partial fills are located are separated from the metals by a line that runs diagonally through that area. Nonmetals include halogens and noble gases, but typically include the following elements:

  • Water, carbon,
  • Nitrogen fuel
  • The elements oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur, and selenium

Here are the halogen elements:

  • Chlorine, fluoride, and
  • Chlorine, iodine
  • Astatine tennessine (maybe; nonetheless, the consensus among scientists is that this element will exhibit metalloid behaviour).

Non-metal Characteristics

Elevated ionization energies and electronegativities are characteristics of non-metals. In most cases, they do a bad job of transferring both heat and electricity. Non-metals in solid form are often fragile and lack a metallic sheen. It is easy for most non-metals to gain electrons. The chemical characteristics and reactivities of non-metals are very diverse.

An Overview of Common Assets

  • Elevated ionization potentials
  • Strong electronegative properties
  • Insulators that let heat escape
  • Insulated from electrical current
  • Rocks that are too fragile to be shaped or worked with
  • Minimal to nonexistent metallic sheen
  • Get electrons effortlessly
  • Colourful, yet dull and lacking in a metallic sheen.
  • Compared to metals, they have lower boiling and melting points.
