Scope:

The ASTM D1084 test method is used to determine adhesive viscosity. The adhesive’s fluid flow is also taken into account in order to suit the machine’s requirements. Viscosity is significant during the coating step because uncured adhesives react differently when “ran” across a surface. Adhesive makers usually provide information about the viscosity and solid content of the product to assist engineers in determining which product is best for a certain application. Furthermore, viscosity is a valuable tool for determining material qualities such as molecular weight and density, both of which can affect flow behavior.

Procedure:

There are several test methods described in ASTM D1082 for determining the viscosity of Newtonian and near Newtonian flow characteristics. The following are the four types of tests that are covered:

➢ Method A of Testing:

Only adhesives that can provide 50 mL in a constant, unbroken stream from one of the cups made of brass, bronze, or other metals are eligible for Method A.

➢ Method B of Testing:

Method B is confined to materials with or approaching Newtonian flow characteristics and is intended for measuring the viscosity of adhesives in the range of 0.05 Pa. s to 200 Pa. s (50 to  200 000 cP).

➢ Method C of testing:

Test Method C of ASTM D1082 is primarily designed as a control method for determining the viscosity of adhesives with or approaching Newtonian flow properties.

➢ Method D of Testing:

Method D is primarily intended as a control method for determining the viscosity of materials with equivalent viscosities of less than 3000 cP and is confined to materials with or approaching  Newtonian flow characteristics.

Specimen size:

Sample adhesives are used as test specimens during the ASTM D1084 test procedure.

Data:

The viscosity of adhesives is reported in the SI unit and is considered as standard.

Complete identification of the adhesive tested, source, manufacturer’s code numbers, form, date of the test, date of manufacture, etc. is reported according to the ASTM D1084 test method.

Conclusion:

The ASTM D1084 test method is used to determine adhesive viscosity. The adhesive’s fluid flow is also taken into account in order to suit the machine’s requirements.
