Scope:
The standard test method of ASTM E23 tells about the behavior of metal when subjected to a single application of a force resulting in multi-axial stresses associated with a notch, coupled with high rates of loading and, in some instances, high or low temperatures.
Procedure:
In ASTM E23, a suitable specimen, a set of anvils, and specimen supports on which the test specimen is placed to receive the blow of the moving mass, a moving mass with sufficient energy to break the specimen placed in its path, and a device for measuring the energy absorbed by the broken specimen are the essential features of an impact test.
Specimen size:
For ASTM E23, the testing machine is of robust structure, like a pendulum, and built to conform to the requirements annually. Charpy impact machines are checked directly and indirectly.
Perpendicularity between the notch axis and specimen edge is 62° and the angle of notch is 61°.
Finish requirements – Ra= 2μm on notched surface and opposite face.
Data
h = S (1 – cos (β))
h1 = S (1 – cos (α))
Where,
h = initial elevation of the striker,
S = length of the pendulum distance to the center of the strike,
β = angle of fall,
h1 = height of rise, m, and
α = angle of rise.
Conclusion:
The standard test method of ASTM E23 tells about the behavior of metal when subjected to a single application of a force resulting in multi-axial stresses associated with a notch, coupled with high rates of loading and, in some instances, high or low temperatures.
