Scope:
This ASTM E1545 test method can be used for research and development, quality control, and specification acceptance. Thermomechanical analysis can detect changes in hardness or linear expansion associated with the glass transition quickly.
Procedure:
This ASTM E1545 test method assigns the change in dimension of a specimen observed when the material was subjected to a constant heating rate using thermomechanical analysis equipment (thermomechanical analyzer, dilatometer, or similar instrument). The glass transition temperature was calculated by intersecting the extrapolation of the slope of the probe displacement curve before and after the transition.
Specimen size:
The ASTM E1545 test specimen should be conditioned at a temperature of ±0.1°C.
Data:
Glass transition temperature can be calculated by using the following equation:
Tg = [1/Tg + K/Mw]−1
K = polymer dependent constant
Mw = weight average molar mass
Conclusion:
By using this ASTM E1545 test method glass transition temperature of materials can be determined on heating using thermomechanical measurements.
