ASTM E1458 Calibration Verification of Laser Diffraction Instruments

Scope

This ASTM E1458 test method allows a user to evaluate an instrument’s performance to the manufacturer’s tolerance limit requirements and confirm that the instrument is suitable for ongoing routine usage. It also allows for the automatic generation of calibration data on a regular basis, resulting in the creation of a database from which any changes in the instrument’s performance are derived.

Procedure

For the ASTM E1458 test, the reticle positioning apparatus must have two translational degrees of freedom to enable planar movements. For precise transmission optics, reticles are cleaned using regular procedures. A planar surface when placed in an optical beam, a substrate produces reflections, and it is certain that these reflections do not reach the laser diffraction instrument’s detector. The spot where the light reflects is observed.

Specimen size

Representative diameters and measures of the dispersion of the particle size distribution are used to find specimen size for a particular ASTM E1458 test.

Data

Values of volume median diameter and relative span are determined to find results.
