The specimen is taken in the form of a chill cast disk, casting, foil sheet, plate, or extrusion. Scope:

Procedure:
In ASTM E1251, the specimens are burnt as per the conditions and the qualitative analysis is performed. Unless a burn yields a very anomalous internal standard count or looks to be awful visually, the results from all burns are to be averaged. When a burn is rejected, it has to be replaced to keep the average number of burns at the same level.

Specimen size should be as per the requirements. In this ASTM E1251 test, the measurements of the sample should be (about 0.010 in. or 250 μm).
