Scope:

The bursting strength of paper products is determined by the test method ASTM D774/D774M. The bursting strength of different types of paper is often used as a measure of its resistance to rupture. The test is simple and inexpensive to conduct, and it appears to mimic some usage requirements. The results help specify the use of paper products and give a hint of their durability.

Procedure:

ASTM D774/D774M test method proceeds by determining the strength of the paper under study and the preliminary bursting test is performed with a high-capacity gauge. The position of the specimens is adjusted and hydrostatic pressure is applied until they rupture. Ten tests are conducted for accurate results.  

Specimen Size:

Specimen size should be as per the requirements. In this ASTM D774/D774M test, flat sheets with a bursting strength of 30 kPa to 1400 kPa [4 psi to 200 psi] that is not more than 0.6 mm [0.025 in.] thick and a bursting strength of 30 kPa to 1400 kPa [4 psi to 200 psi] are used.

Data:

The bursting strength as the arithmetic mean of the test results on each sample is calculated. The grammage and burst ratio is also determined by applying the formula.
