Scope:

In ASTM D7169, the boiling point distribution of crude oils, vacuum residues and other petroleum fractions can be determined which provides useful information for the refinery operations. The mass percent yield of products can be estimated using these boiling point distributions.

Procedure:

In ASTM D7169, the value arrays are used to store the boiling point distribution results for the samples. They are mixed together at a temperature that does not surpass the boiling point of n-nonane. From the combined data, a new boiling point distribution is calculated. After the integration, recovery larger than 100% by mass is normalized.

Data:

 The response factor can be calculated by using the following formula:

     Fi = Mi ×Pi ×Ac20

             Ai ×Mc20×Pc20

Mi = mass of paraffin

Mc20 = mass of eicosane

 Ai = peak area of paraffin

Ac20 = peak area of eicosane

Pi = percent purity of paraffin

Pc20 = percent purity of eicosane

Specimen size:

The specimen should be conditioned at a temperature nearest to ± 0.5 °C (1 °F).

Conclusion:

ASTM D7169 standard method involves using high temperature GC to determine the boiling point distribution and cut point intervals of crude oils and residues.
