Scope:
ASTM D6902-04 measures the amount of evaluated formaldehyde from a coating containing melamine-formaldehyde resins. The intention is to give reproducible comparative laboratory evaluation and not duplicate the evolved formaldehyde from an industrial process. The catalyzed coating systems that cure at or below 40°C are disapproval of this method.
Test Procedure:
A 0.2 g coating formulation is placed in an aluminum foil pan, dried in a vacuum oven at 40°C to remove free formaldehyde and solvents. A sample is baked at the optimum process cure temperature for 30 min. The Formaldehyde emission from the curing chamber is collected on a DNPH/ Silica tube. The extracted sample is analyzed by HPLC/UV. The amount of formaldehyde evolved from the coating during the curing step is calculated on both a wet-weight and dry-weight basis.

Measuring capacity from 500 μg/g to 22000 μg formaldehyde/g dry coating under the test conditions specified (3000 ml/min total flow, 50 ml/min DNPH tube flow).
