Scope:
The ASTM D6761 test method provides information about various catalysts. The volume of pores in the range of catalytic relevance as well as possible adsorption mechanisms can be measured using this test method. To perform the measurements, this test procedure necessitates the use of mercury. The results obtained help in specifying the application of various catalysts.
Procedure:
In ASTM D6761, the difference between the particle volume and the real volume, as measured by mercury intrusion and helium pycnometer, is used to calculate the total pore volume of a catalyst or catalyst carrier. Mercury intrusion at ambient pressure determines particle volume, while helium displacement at pressures above ambient determines the actual volume.
Specimen Size:
The specimen should be taken as per the ASTM 6761 test requirements. The specimen should be enough to fill ¼th of the sample cup.
Data:
The pore volume can be calculated as follows:
P.V. = VHg – VHe
Conclusion:
ASTM D6761 test method determines the properties of catalysts by detecting the total pore volume of various catalysts and catalyst carriers.
