Scope:
ASTM D6736 is useful in areas where clothing or upholstered furniture rub against a wall; Interior flat paints may become burnished. This rubbing may result in an evener, glossier surface at the contacted area. This method permits a more quantitative estimate of burnishing resistance than manual rubbing techniques.
Procedure:
In ASTM D6736, paints are dropped down on plastic panels through an applicator and dry in the open air for one week. Readings are taken at three equal points along the center of the panel. Then the panel is rubbed for 20 cycles with the help of a scrub machine after those readings are retaken in the same manner on the scrub machine. The initial and final values are averaged.
Specimen Size:
In ASTM D6736, test paints are drawn down lengthwise on plastic panels using a 0.18-mm (7.0-mil) applicator.
Result:
As different paint formulations are different in their ability to resist gloss change from burnishing, precision will also vary. In this way, the resistance of latex paints to burnishing under dry conditions is done.
Conclusion:
ASTM D6736 is a standardized test that describes a method for measuring the resistance of latex paints to burnishing under dry conditions.
