Scope:

ASTM D6097 test method determines the growth of two types of water trees, such as bow-tie trees and vented water trees formed in the solid dielectric insulating material. It provides comparative data regarding the performance and application of such materials. The conditions are specified for the growth of water trees, and the standards are set to evaluate different materials. The voltages, temperature, frequencies, defects, and aqueous solutions for the materials are determined to specify their applications.

Procedure:

In ASTM D6097, a mixture of silicon and rubber is prepared to be placed in a vacuum desiccator. The sample is mounted in the specimen holder, and 2.5 g of sealant is squeezed on it. The electrolyte solution is prepared to accelerate the growth of the water tree. The specimen holder is laced in a water bath, and the nickel-chromium wire electrode assembly is placed in its center. Next, the wire electrodes are connected to a supply, and the treed specimens are stained. The specimens are sliced and separated from the holder, and the tree measurements are done.

Specimen Size:

The specimen used in ASTM D6097 testing comprises a disk and a conical defect. The disk and conical defect diameters are 25.4 mm and 3.2mm, respectively.

Data:

The average and standard deviation of each material are determined. The length and thickness, along with the resistance to water-tree growth, are detected.

Conclusion:

ASTM D6097 test method determines the properties of extruded polymeric insulation materials by measuring the relative resistance to vented water-tree growth.
