ASTM D6040 Standard Test Method for Unsintered Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) Extruded Film
ASTM D6040 is used for evaluating unsintered extruded films or tapes made of PTFE. The SI values are considered standard.
Scope:
The standard test of ASTM D6040 is used for the evaluation of unsintered extruded films or tapes made of PTFE. The width, thickness, tensile properties, dielectric constant, and other properties are covered in the test method.
Test Procedure:
In ASTM D6040, firstly the tape is conditioned for 4 hours before testing at the standard laboratory temperature of 23 °C. The tensile strength is calculated, and percentage elongation is based on the maximum load values. The percentage of a volatile material is calculated following the test method. Furthermore, the electrical insulating materials’ relative permittivity is determined. One specimen is selected per lot and tested.

Test Specimen:
The test specimen should have a length and thickness of 450 and 0.0025 mm, respectively. The number of test specimens must be per the individual test method required.

Wg = weight of the specimen, g, and
V = volume of specimen, cm3
