Scope:

The criteria for producing skived tape are defined by ASTM D 3308 Standard Specification, with a focus on a thickness range of 0.013 to 6.35 mm (0.0005 to 0.250 in.). Only PTFE resin molding and extrusion materials may be used to make the tape. By upholding industry standards and product integrity, these rules guarantee the consistent quality and performance of PTFE skived tape within the designated thickness range.

Test Procedure:

Standard Specification ASTM D 3308 The following test methods must be used to determine the properties listed in this specification:

For any thickness changes, the material should be measured using Method A from Test Methods D374. The test procedure described in Specification D4894 should be used to determine the melting point of a single specimen. It is advised to revise the following for greater accuracy and clarity:

To determine various properties of tapes or films, specific test methods should be followed. The thickness of these materials should be ascertained using Method A from Test Methods D374, which is applicable for all thicknesses. The melting point should be determined using the test technique outlined in Specification D4894, and this can be done for a single specimen.

When dealing with tapes or films that are at least 1.0 mm (0.04 in) thick, the tensile strength and percentage elongation at break should be determined according to Test Method D638. Specimens are tested at a rate of 20 in./min with a 10% elongation allowance.

For tapes or films that are less than 1.0 mm (0.04 in.) thick, Test Method D882 should be employed to determine the relevant properties. These standardized testing procedures ensure the accurate assessment of materials’ characteristics, including thickness, melting point, tensile strength, and elongation, providing valuable data for various applications and quality control.

Using the short-time test following Test Methods D149, the dielectric strength should be evaluated. For tapes with a thickness up to and including 0.254 mm (0.010 in), air should be used as the test medium. Oil should be utilized as the test medium for tapes thicker than 0.254 mm (0.010 in) or where the specimen arrangement can cause flashover or partial discharge (corona) during the test. Each quantity of tape should have its dielectric strength measured using three samples.

Two specimens should have their specific gravities determined using Test Method D792’s Method A. Two drops of a wetting agent (such as liquid detergent or another surfactant) should be added to the water to lower surface tension and guarantee complete sample wetting. The use of Test Method D1389 is recommended for identifying electrical faults.

Test Specimen:

As a test specimen, the ASTM D 3308 standard test specification is used. Skived PTFE Resin Tape

Data:

Using conditions to conduct tests at the Infinita laboratory temperature of 23 ± 2°C (70 to 77°F), ASTM D 3308 standard test specifications are used.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, ASTM D 3308, the Standard Specification for PTFE Resin Skived Tape, establishes critical requirements for the production of PTFE tape, guaranteeing its high quality and effectiveness in a variety of applications. For the dependability and safety of a product, compliance with this standard is essential.
