Scope:
The ASTM D6247 test technique involves X-ray fluorescence spectrometry determination of elemental content in polyolefins at concentration levels similar to those given by additives and reactor activities. Multielement concentrations in polyethylene or polypropylene materials, or both, can be determined using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, which is an accurate and reasonably quick approach. It can also be utilized for post-reactor investigations, additive levels in formulated resins, and finished goods as a quality control measure.
By presenting reference materials, critically assessing standard test techniques, and educating industry representatives who engage with standards development organizations, the ASTM D6247 test method is intended to increase the analytical capabilities of polyolefin producers.
Procedure:
The test specimen for ASTM D6247 is compression molded or injection molded into a clean, uniform plaque. The plaque is bombarded with a beam of primary X-rays in the Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (WDXRF), which causes each element to glow at different wavelengths (lines). The proper lines and spectrometer test settings vary depending on each element and other parameters in the sample matrix, such as detector response, concentration range, and other components. These secondary X-rays are dispersed with proper spacing diffraction crystals and detected by detectors set up at angles corresponding to the lines of interest. Then, the concentration of the analyte is calculated by comparing the line intensity to a calibration curve.
Specimen size:
Plaques with satisfactory surface polish and uniformity are used as test specimens for ASTM D6247.
Data:
The concentration of elemental content in polyolefins is reported in the SI unit and is considered as standard
Conclusion:
The ASTM D6247 test technique involves X-ray fluorescence spectrometry determination of elemental content in polyolefins at concentration levels similar to those given by additives and reactor activities.
