Fire and Flammability Tests for Materials (ASTM C1166)
A standardized laboratory test called ASTM C1166 is used to examine how dense and cellular elastomeric gaskets spread flame. The information gained from this test aids engineers and suppliers in making better material choices for shims, spacers, gaskets, setting blocks, and other elastomeric compound-based components.
Contrasting flammability regulations might be perplexing for suppliers of the automobile, rail, or mass transportation industries. While the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration, or FRA, mandates specific flammability standards for dense cellular materials and elastomeric gaskets used in the building of passenger railcars; individual OEMs frequently apply their own particular rules.
In this test, a sample is exposed to the open flame of a bunsen burner for five minutes and fifteen minutes, respectively. In either instance, the flame should not travel beyond 4.87″ (or 100mm).
The resultant flame spread is calculated and the specimen’s surface flammability is identified using the values of the Flame Spread Index, generally known as SI units. In this way, it is possible to confirm that elastomeric materials intended for use in seat cushions, window gaskets, diaphragms, and other applications comply with the fire safety standards set forth by the relevant industry.
Infinita Labs has a lot of testing experience and is an ISO and A2LA recognized laboratory. This indicates that we are completely equipped to carry out tests that satisfy the specifications of regulatory agencies like Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the International Standards Organization (ISO), and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), including ASTM C1166 testing. We have extensive experience delivering specialized testing, which involves the design, construction, and installation of unique test equipment.
