Scope:

ASTM D6113 measurements give data that is valuable in the design of electrical or optical connections and product development. Heat release measurements give a quantitative assessment of changes in fire performance.

Procedure:

In ASTM D6113, a data gathering system is prepared for testing according to the system’s operational protocols. Data is collected in 5 minutes. After inserting the test specimen, the spark igniter is energized and brought into place quickly. Physical changes such as melting, and swelling are observed.

Specimen size:

The ASTM D6113 test specimen should be conditioned at 100 ± 2 by 100 ± 2 mm.

Data:

The average mass loss rate (in g/s) is calculated for the time interval when 10% of the ultimate test specimen mass loss happened and when 90% of the ultimate test specimen mass loss occurred.

Conclusion:

ASTM D6113 measurements give data that is valuable in the design of electrical or optical connections and product development.
