Scope:

The nonvolatile content of aqueous adhesives such as dextrin, starch, casein, and animal gelatin is determined using the ASTM D1489 test technique. Tube winding, laminating, case and carton sealing, packing, bottle labeling, flat gumming, envelope sealing, and gummed tape manufacturing are just a few of the applications for aqueous adhesive non-volatile components.  For adhesive selection and product homogeneity, this test method can be used to compare the nonvolatile content of various adhesives and is appropriate for quality assurance and research.

Procedure:

Before extracting a specimen for testing, ASTM D1489 requires a sample in a glass jar of homogeneous consistency. Each composite sample has two 10-g specimens tested. 10 g of the glue is weighed to the nearest 0.01 g and then put into a small beaker. The sample is then dispersed in 50 mL of hot distilled water and poured into a 200-mL volumetric flask. Using hot distilled water, the resulting solution is diluted to the desired mark. On each dispersion created in this manner for the ASTM D1489 test, duplicate tests are done.

Ten milliliters of the dispersion is pipetted into a tared weighing vial that is three-quarters full with dry silica sand. Then, the sample is dried and weighed and is returned to the oven for another 5 minutes once the same weight is attained in two successive weighings. The bottle is then covered and allowed to cool to ambient temperature in a desiccator with a desiccant before being weighed to the closest 0.001 g.

Specimen size:

Composite samples of adhesives are used in the ASTM D1489 test method as a test specimen.

Data:

As per the ASTM D1489 test method, the percent of nonvolatile content is calculated as follows:

Nonvolatile matter, %= (W₁/W₂) × 2000

where,

W1 = weight of dried residue

W₂ = weight of the original 10-g specimen

Conclusion:

The nonvolatile content of aqueous adhesives such as dextrin, starch, casein, and animal gelatin is determined using the ASTM D1489 test technique.
