Scope:
ASTM D6474-12 is used to determine the molecular weight distribution and molecular weight averages of polyethylene (except LDPE) and polypropylene resins. Physical qualities, such as shape, strength, melt flow, and so on, are greatly affected by differences in molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. As a result, the qualities of items made from these resins are different.
Procedure
A polyolefin sample is dissolved in a solvent and injected onto a chromatographic column(s) filled with a solid substrate, separating the molecules in solution according to their size. As the separated molecules elute from the column, they are detected and recorded according to concentration. Retention times are converted to molecular weights by calibration. The molecular weight concentration data helps calculates the average molecular weight parameters and molecular weight distribution.
