ASTM D1489 Nonvolatile Content of Aqueous Adhesives

The nonvolatile content of aqueous adhesives can be determined using ASTM D1489 test method. A 1 L aliquot of extract fr om a sample was used in the gravimetric test. The extract is boiled at 105 °C after being evaporated below the solvent's boiling point. The leftover residue is weighed, and the results are compared to the pass/fail criteria that were discovered. This nonvolatile content can be expressed in terms of percentage. For adhesive selection and product uniformity, this test method can be used to compare the nonvolatile content of various adhesives... Read More

    Scope:

The nonvolatile content of aqueous adhesives such as dextrin, starch, casein, and animal gelatin can be determined using ASTM D1489 test method.

    Test Procedure:

In ASTM D1489 the tested sample has to be in the glass jar with uniform consistency. It should be further examined for no evidence of settling or adhesive separation. If so found, it has to be mixed thoroughly. Other factors, such as foaming or contamination, lead to replacement of the samples. This adhesive test requires 10 g specimens from each composite sample in a tiny beaker. Samples were transferred to 200 mL volumetric flask  after dispersion in 50 mL of hot distilled water. The beaker should be rinsed with hot distilled water and then pour the rinses into the flask. Using hot distilled water, dilute to the desired mark. Repeat the test or each dispersion in the same manner.  Pipette 10 mL of the dispersion into a tarred weighing bottle with silica sand that has been dried to a constant weight. In the constant temperature oven, dry the sample in the bottle at 105 ± 1 °C (221 ± 2 °F) until it has reached a constant weight. This can be established by quickly weighing the bottle on the scale at predetermined times. Return the sample to the oven for another 5 min once the same weight is attained in two successive weighings. Cover the bottle and cool to room temperature in a desiccator with desiccant before weighing to the closest 0.001 g.

    Sample size:

To test in accordance with ASTM D1489, the adhesive sample must be representative of the lot being assessed. The quantity must be at least 1 L aliquot made up of a composite drawn at random from three or more distinct containers, if possible. Mix the sample thoroughly until it has a homogeneous consistency. Place the composite sample in an airtight glass container and test it right away.

    Data:

The values should be stated in SI units to be regarded as standard.

Conclusion: The nonvolatile content of aqueous adhesives can be determined using ASTM D1489 test method. For adhesive selection and product uniformity, this test method can be used to compare the nonvolatile content of various adhesives.
