Scope:

This ASTM D 2126 standard test method recommends several exposure settings based on anticipated use to model how rigid cellular polymers behave in diverse applications. Variations in temperature and humidity are present in these testing settings. Measurements are performed after exposure when the samples reach room temperature. It is necessary to make clear any specimens tested under exposure circumstances. This method supports the wide range of potential applications for these plastics while assisting in estimating material behavior.

Test Procedure:

The test specimens, conditioned as per the requirements, shall be exposed in a circulating air oven, humidity oven, or cold box maintained at one of the combinations of temperature and relative humidity. It is imperative that there is substantially free air circulation around the test specimens. The specimens shall be exposed under the specified conditions for 24 hours ± 1 hour, 168 hours ± 2 hours (one week), and 336 hours ± 2 hours (two weeks). Intermediate observations are recommended as a guide to full-term performance. It has been demonstrated in a round-robin study that there is no significant difference between continuous exposure and exposure interrupted for up to 4 hours for measurement purposes. After exposure, the specimens are to be allowed to return to room temperature for 2 hours before measuring and testing. Specimen dimensions (and mass, when specified) are to be measured. A visual examination shall be conducted to record changes in general appearance at each stage of the testing procedure, utilizing the terms defined in Terminology D883 to describe defects.

Test Specimen:

Test specimens for the ASTM D 2126 standard test method must have a minimum of 100 by 100 mm by supplied thickness (4 by 4 in. by supplied thickness).

Data:

Standard specification ASTM D 2126 As a percentage of the initial measurement, determine the changes in dimensions (and mass, if supplied) as follows:

                    Change, % = mfm0m0 100

where

mf stands for the final measurement and mo for the starting point.

Conclusion:

As a result, ASTM D 2126 establishes a uniform testing procedure for analyzing the reaction of rigid cellular plastics to thermal and humid aging, giving critical information for evaluating their robustness and performance in various applications.
