What Is Telebrineller Hardness Testing?

The Telebrineller is a portable, comparative hardness testing method covered under ASTM E110, the Standard Test Method for Rockwell and Brinell Hardness of Metallic Materials by Portable Hardness Testers. It’s used to check Brinell hardness directly on large, heavy, or fixed-in-place components — structural steel, pressure vessels, castings, and weldments — that can’t be moved to a benchtop Brinell tester.

Working Principle

A hammer blow simultaneously drives a steel ball indenter into both the test piece and a reference bar of known hardness, side by side. The resulting indentation diameters are compared, and hardness is calculated from the ratio: HB(test) = HB(reference) x (d_reference^2 / d_test^2). Indentation diameters are measured with a calibrated optical scope with a graduated reticle.

Test Procedure

  • Select a reference bar with a known Brinell hardness close to the expected hardness of the test piece
  • Prepare the test surface: flat, smooth, and free of scale, paint, or loose material — light grinding or filing is typically needed
  • Position the tester so the ball indenter contacts both the reference bar and the test surface
  • Strike the tester with a hammer to create simultaneous indentations
  • Measure both indentation diameters under the optical scope
  • Calculate hardness using the ratio formula above

Accuracy and Application Range

The Telebrineller is inherently less precise than a laboratory Brinell tester, with typical accuracy of +/-5-15% of true Brinell hardness depending on surface finish, operator technique, and reference bar quality. It’s effective on ferrous metals and some non-ferrous alloys in the approximate 80-400 HBW range; very hard materials may not produce a measurable indentation at standard impact force. It’s also usable on weld metal, provided surface prep requirements are met.
